Croquet
After eight weeks of frustrating lockdown Narooma Croquet Club restarted play on Monday (October 11) morning with four games of golf croquet on court No 1. In a quiet, but joyful start, there were six contestants with Jean Phillips figuring in two wins. Also a new player, Vi Kelleher, happily had her first tryout game.

Golf Croquet
Play on Thursday morning got off to a halting start due to uncertainty with the wet weather and the state of the greens. At 9.30am the club captain ruled that, with the sun breaking through and the green on court No 1 playable, play could begin at 10.30am. Court No 2 is currently under renovation and re-sowing. Six players lined up for the ensuing golf croquet competition, including welcome visitors from Nowra, namely club champion Brian Mitchell accompanied by Angie Stewart. In four hard-fought games honours were fairly even with Christine Stent and Brian Mitchell finishing just ahead of their rivals.
Score details: Game 1 - Brian Mitchell and Christine Stent 7 def Fay O'Connor and Angie Stewart 4. Game 2 - Di Sims 7 def Len Favier 3. Game 3 - Len Favier and Brian Mitchell 7 def Angie Stewart and Di Sims 4. Game 4 - Christine Stent 7 def Fay O'Connor 6.
During progress of the croquet games a group of 10 colourfully dressed spectators - some bearing flowers - gathered in readiness for the luncheon social enjoyed by all in the re-opened Dalmeny Club at 12.15pm, after completion of play.
Association Croquet
Last Saturday only one match of the regular competition of association croquet was played between Janet Jones and Len Favier in muggy weather conditions. With good run on the green of court No 1, this match followed a familiar pattern with Len Favier scooting out to a lead of five points to nil after only 10 minutes of play. Then Janet Jones got past the first hoop and quickly ran down her opponent to go away and win on the maximum of 26 points in record time of one hour and 25 minutes. Meanwhile 'shell-shocked' Len limped home on eight points.
Player of the week
Although only playing one match, the outstanding performance of Janet Jones in association croquet, meant that Janet was certainly player of the week for Narooma Croquet Club.
Pauline Wilcock still retains the previously awarded 'Blue Cow Award' and also Deb McKellar still retains the 'Pink Pig Award' until croquet competition gets into full swing.
Yet to play this first return week were eight players, namely, Louise Starkie (recovering from broken collarbone), Paul Chenoweth and Cathy Sforcina (resting after a long journey and rehabilitation), Pearl Hanson (medical reasons) plus Mary Ryan, Pauline Wilcock and Helen Stannard (held off for the rain) while Heather McGourty had work commitments.

Sunday's Mixed Foursomes Championships
The Mixed Foursomes Championships attracted a very good field of 52 players and the scratch event was won by Scott Ker and Sylvia Donohoe with 75 ahead of Rod Streater and Jayne Hotchkis on 81 and Scott Harris and Tracey Mitchell on 82. The handicap event was won by Diane Knoll and Mitch Mitchell on 67.5, with Di and Clive Williamson on 70.5 and Jayne Hotchkis and Rod Streater on 71.5 in the minor positions.
Threatening weather conditions reduced the field to 98 players on Thursday and in A Grade a four-way countback on 36 points was needed to decide the placings where club captain Andrew Thompson was rewarded with the victory off his handicap of 11. Chris Ritchie finished second after a two-under-par round and his brother Ben taking third place with Barry Wellard missing out. In B Grade Terry O'Callaghan posted the equal best score of the day with 40 points off his handicap of 14 with Garry Ebbeling in second place on 36 points. The remaining placing went to Paul Davey on 35 points ahead of Tony Ings on a countback. C Grade was taken out by John Gregs with 40 points off his handicap of 36 with Robert Brown in second place on 37 points on a countback from Grahame Cooke.
The NTP winners were Mark Anderson on 3, Brendon Warby on 9 Wayne Evans on 14 and Preston Cope on 17, while the ball competition went almost all the way down the 34 points range as far as Chris Eardley on a countback.
Yet another excellent Saturday field of 173 players enjoyed fine weather on Saturday in the last in the final round of the Stableford competition. In A Grade Chris Ritchie produced an outstanding round of golf in scoring 40 points off his handicap of plus two which translates to a six-under-par score of 66 off the stick. Clive Williamson took second position with 38 points ahead of Ken Brown on countback.
B Grade was taken out by Ron Bezzina with 39 points off his handicap of 16 ahead of five players on 38 points where the countback favoured Matthew Klose and Grahame Cooke with Mark Falconer, Mark Westwood and Peter Kearney missing out.
In C Grade Troy Beacham registered the best score of the day with 42 points off his handicap of 21 with John Willett and Sharon Wilder from Bermagui in the minor positions on 40 and 39 points respectively. The NTP winners were Ken Brown on 3, Ricky Falconer on 9 and Bec Smart on 17 while the ball competition went down as far as Robert Mack on 32 points on a countback. RGI

After a near two-month layoff where the Goose could have flown off anywhere unrestricted but my co-pilot couldn't make it out of the hanger and didn't that cause a flap but it certainly wasn't due to her usual excess baggage so it was great getting together with the other 29 double-vaxed bowling mates under a near cloudless sky when experts had predicted wet weather. The other Goose, Peter, rolled out the cards which saw the highest winning margin deciding the winners on 29 (it was checked, just like their opposition) in naturally the Spade Sims, Packman Ace and Shark Finn from the runners-up on 13, after countback, in Nek-back Bennie, First-man Thwaite and Emberly Footprint. Ace scored the only resting toucher and the $142 jackpot again stayed in the bag while the lucky losers on rink 6 were Steel Jones, Nod-back Heaven-Less and John-Blue Boy. Nobody had any wrong biases while the winning raffle tickets went to the Spade, again, Laughing Lloyd and John Oarley.
Thursday's weather started out okay but showering rain came just before and after drinks for the 16 bowlers scraped up by Spade Sims and G-Harold Lavis, who had to sort out the cards from the 2 sign-on sheets, one of which nominated open draw, a left over from our scheduled game before shut-down and probably cost a few extra bowlers. They did it with a plum, but with the rain, cutting down the ends and washing off the stains, lucky rinks decided the winners on rink 6 for the Spade (again), the Goose and gospeller Bob with not enough players for the runners-up prize. No one scored a resting toucher while the $328 jackpot didn't go off either. The wrong bias jar was back in use for the Shark with the winning raffle tickets being sold to our Macedonian Illya and none other than the Spade. Hope there are no restrictions on our not-too-well returning round Ossie, president Chef Keith, get back to us soon, mate, as we need your weight behind our club.
Sadly the first night of twilight bowls was not played due to the showering rain and with only one name down on the sheet, he didn't feel like getting wet and playing singles. So next week, all double-vaxed players over the age of 12, get yourselves signed-in by Friday 4.45pm for a 5.30 start of two hours of fun, pairs bowls with prizes for winners and runners-up, depending on numbers and for the first resting toucher.
The semi-final round of the mixed pairs championship will still have to wait until next week and maybe even longer as we ponder hip repairs carried out during lock-down that has affected at least one player so check with the notice board or listen for announcements during the week as to what is happening and boy/girl/man/woman wasn't it great to be back on the green among friends indulging in the game we all enjoy, at least most of the time.

Social Bowls Winners' Circle
Finally, back to bowls on Wednesday and we had 40 bowlers making up six rinks of triples and a rink of pairs. Winners were decided by Lucky Rinks and this week the winners were John Rowley, Jeff McCusker and Dennis Maggs (skip) who were in terrific form, for the first day back, to lead 10 to five after 10 ends and played through the showers to take their match 15 to eight against John Voytas, John Redman and Jeremy Seaton (skip).
Second place went to Scott Kennedy, Tony Cobcroft and Rob Coulson (skip) who were ahead eight to five when rain stopped play on their rink, and they claimed a win against Al Chisholm, Rod Holman and Peter Jones (skip).
Scotty Kennedy had his eye in early to have the first resting toucher at 1.12, well done Scott. Thank you to Rapley's Quality Meat for their continued support.
On Saturday winners were decided by Lucky Rinks with the money going to Neville Butt, Tony Palmer and John Scott (skip) who had a great match, leading throughout for a good win against Garry Evans, Jeff McCusker and Darrell Goodridge (skip).
Second prize went to Carl Lee and Shorty Smart (skip) who obviously had been practicing during the lock down as they couldn't do a thing wrong in their good win against Bob Hawke and Craig Campbell (skip).
On Sunday we had 24 bowlers keen to be back and have an enjoyable game of bowls. Winners, decided by Lowest Winning Margin, were Clare Cork, Jan Rapkins and Ken Burrows (skip) who were all square on four occasions on their way to a 16 to 14 win Kathy South, Cindy Newell and Jean Vos (skip). Second place went to Garry South, Greg Maloney and Barry Lymbery (skip) who were down six to 13 after 11 ends before they clicked into gear to finish strongly for a 22 to 14 win against Sue Sansom, Pat Wood/Merrie Downie and John Scott (skip).
Club Triples Championship
There were two Triples Championship played on Sunday. Les Waldock, Peter Dillon and Greg Ryan (skip) played Allan Chisholm, Peter Tinson and Gary Murane (skip).
In a great exhibition of bowls, Greg's team led 15 to nine after 13 ends only to have Gary's team respond to take the lead 17 to 16 after 17 ends. Scores were tied on three occasions, after that, before Greg, Les and Peter picked up four shots on the second last end and kept their opponents to one shot on the last end for an exciting 25 to 22 win.
In the other match John Voytas, Col Armstrong and Dave Herman (skip) played Warren Bender, John Downie and Jeremy Seaton (skip). It was quite a close match early on with Dave's team leading nine to seven after 12 ends. John, Col and Dave then picked up five ends in a row to lead 19 to eight after 19 ends and despite Jeremy's team taking the next three ends Dave's team countered to take the match 21 to 13.
