A 72-year-old man has been charged with murder as police investigate the circumstances leading up to a woman's death in far north Queensland.

The 65-year-old was found by her son at an Atherton home on Sunday morning, and police will allege she had stab wounds to her stomach.

He called for an ambulance before the woman was declared dead at the scene.

A crime scene was declared and police began searching for the woman's husband who wasn't at home, Detective Acting Inspector Jason Chetham told reporters on Monday.

He was found later the same day after suffering minor injuries in a traffic accident.

The man will face Mareeba Magistrates Court on Tuesday charged with the domestic violence-related offence.
