More live sites for Sydney, Melbourne to view Matildas

Social media was flooded with images of thousands of people packing out existing sites for their quarter-final clash with France on Saturday night.

In a post on social media platform X on Sunday, Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews wrote: "Big game needs a bigger stadium. AAMI Park. Wednesday night. Be there."

It comes after fans were left disappointed at the MCG live site when the feed of Saturday's game was cut from the big screen at 8pm.

Federation Square in Melbourne was packed out early with screaming fans, sending streams of people to Rod Laver Arena.

NSW Premier Chris Minns also announced extra live sites in Sydney for people to cheer on their favourite players.

"The semi-finals are set up for an absolute blockbuster, so we are opening up Commbank Stadium and Allianz Stadium at Moore Park so people can come together and celebrate what will definitely be a victory by the Matildas on Wednesday night," he said.

Large crowds are also expected at the Western Sydney Stadium in Parramatta in the city's west, the official FIFA fan zone at Darling Harbour and in front of large screens outside Olympic Stadium at Homebush, where the game will be played.

"There are plenty of opportunities for people to get out and back the Matildas," Mr Minns said.

"You'll never get another opportunity to see such a massive sporting event on our shores.

"Your vocal cords will play a big part in getting the Matildas over the line."

Mr Minns said public transport officials were confident existing timetables would cope with the extra demand.

He urged people to use common sense and get to a live site nearby.

"This is why we have a site at Parramatta," he said.

"We spread it out through metro Sydney.

"I know there were a few problems last night that they're trying to iron out.

"I think the crowds have been patient - they've been fantastic."

The sails of the Opera House will light up in green and gold on Wednesday, but the premier would not be drawn on questions about a possible public holiday if the Matildas win.

"We've got two games to go before then," he said.

The Matildas were greeted by media and fans decked out in green, gold and teal when they touched down in Sydney on Sunday.

Television ratings showed the Matildas' Saturday night quarter-final was the highest-rating TV sports program of the past decade.

More than 7.2 million people watched parts of the game, with an estimated average audience of 4.17 million people.

Channel Seven said the 472,000 viewers who streamed the game on 7plus made it the biggest streaming event seen in Australia.

Wednesday's match marks the first time the Australian football team has progressed to the semi-final stage of a FIFA Women's World Cup.
