He also had a father who was really into music and who often played a guitar around the house.
"Mum and Dad also took me to folk festivals a lot as a kid - Majors Creek and Cobargo."
So it's little wonder the young Congo lad felt inspired to pursue music, and that when he did he leaned toward folk and rock.
Chasing a career as a full-time musician just had a welcome boost, with Fletcher this week winning the Folk Federation of NSW Young Folk Artist of the Year Award.
He was judged the most accomplished of all applicants in the under 25 years age group, who hailed from across the state.

The award consists of a cash prize, mentoring by experienced folk musicians, performance opportunities at concerts and festivals and a recording session at Blue Mountains Sound.
"I have been building my musical career since teenage years, trying really hard," Fletcher said.
"As the first significant accolade I have received in music, I feel moved that a respected body has recognised my effort."
Fletcher said he was particularly enthused about the opportunities the award provided in performing at folk festivals across the state, and the expanding of professional networks.
"The Folk Federation organises and pays for the mentoring sessions through the year and will help me connect with other more established people in the industry," Fletcher said.
Along with music, the natural environment is Fletcher's passion.
Earlier this year he was able to combine the two when organising Rock On for Climate Action, which took place at Smokey Dan's in Tomakin back in May.
In conjunction with climate action group 350 Eurobodalla, the event involved multiple bands, inspirational young speakers and community groups sharing information about climate change.
As well as his Folk Federation award win, Fletcher was excited to confirm he had just locked in four bands and a date for Rock On for Climate Action 2.
It will be held once again at Smokey Dan's, on February 15, 2025.
In the meantime, Fletcher planned to keep touring and recording over summer.
There was also talk of a new single coming in early 2025.
