About 1.30pm November 28, emergency services were called to the Princes Highway north of Maidens Road, around 20km north of Batemans Bay, following reports of a truck and car crash.
The crash resulted in a large fire and the closure of the highway in both directions for several hours. Diversions were lifted early Friday morning with conditions for motorists returned to normal.
It's understood that people on the scene had tried to rescue the ute driver from his vehicle, but were unable to due to the intensity of the truck fire.

Police have confirmed the male driver of the utility, aged 37, died at the scene.
The male driver of the truck, aged 57, was not injured in the incident and was taken to Batemans Bay Hospital for mandatory testing.
The highway was closed in both directions for some time,
Officers attached to the South Coast Police District, assisted by specialist officers attached to the Crash Investigation Unit, established a crime scene and began investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
A report will be prepared for the information of the Coroner.
