Detectives have arrested a suspected murderer less than a day after emergency services found an elderly man suffering fatal stab wounds in a hotel room.

Police were called to the hotel on Brougham Street in Geelong, Victoria after 11.50pm on February 19 following reports that the New Zealand national had been found with serious injuries. 
The 82-year-old victim was allegedly assaulted and stabbed by another hotel guest before he died at the scene.
The alleged attacker and the victim knew each other, Victoria Police said.
"At this stage, the incident appears isolated," investigators said.
Police arrested the 34-year-old Geelong man on Elizabeth Street in Melbourne's CBD on the afternoon of February 20.
He was charged with one count of murder and appeared at Melbourne Magistrates' Court that evening.

His case remains before the court.
Homicide detectives cordoned off the hotel and established a crime scene at the hotel. Officers from the Major Crime Scene Unit were assisting in the investigation.
