Investigators were told the 29-year-old victim had been driving a truck in Sydney's west at 11.20pm on May 12 when the shooting started.
He was driving on Donald Street in Yennora when a car stopped suddenly in front of him.
A man got out of the car and allegedly fired a number of shots at the truck before driving away, police were told.
NSW Ambulance paramedics treated the 29-year-old at the scene before he was transferred to the hospital in a stable condition.

He was shot in the wrist and abdomen, police said.
Police have established a crime scene and are investigating the circumstances surrounding the alleged shooting.
Car fires
Shortly after emergency services were called with reports of the shooting, a number of cars were allegedly set alight in neighbouring suburbs.
Police said a black Lexus sedan was set alight on Dixmude Street, South Granville and a second car was set alight on Boundary Road, Chester Hill.
Both fires were extinguished and crime scenes were established.
Police are investigating the links between the car fires and the shooting.
