The European Baggage Claim Report by travel insurance provider PassportCard found those three countries recorded more than 80 per cent of the company's overseas theft claims by Australian travellers.
Italy had the highest amount of claims at 49 per cent, followed by France (17 per cent) and the United Kingdom (17 per cent). Spain and Greece round out the top five European countries for theft claims.
PassportCard's Michael Storozhev told ACM, the publisher of this masthead, that Italy, France, and the UK continued to be three of the most popular destinations for Australian travellers.
"People feel comfortable with them because they seem safe," he said.
"This can mean travellers don't prepare sufficiently for them, and they can be targeted by thieves."
The findings come amid an influx of Australian tourists to Europe.
"It is a very popular destination for Australians right now," Mr Storozhev said.
"Europe is one of the more seasonal destinations, especially with European summer coming up in July and August."
The report also found that almost 40 per cent of Australians are heading overseas with $2000 to $5000 worth of items in their luggage.
The top three items Australians say they'd be most upset to lose while travelling were tech items like phones, laptops, AirPods and cameras (88 per cent), sentimental items including engagement rings, wedding dress or a toddler's favourite toy (64 per cent) followed by clothing (21 per cent).
