Last Saturday over 80 people gathered at the South Arm Community Hall to reunite, regroup and reconnect after the Kian Rd Bushfire tore through the area 12 months earlier. The committee put together a huge grazing platter, fresh seafood, a barbecue and a time capsule to commemorate the one-year anniversary of the fire that changed our lives forever. Community spirit was alive and well, with laughter filling the hall from a large group of children. The topics of conversation were vastly different from those 12 months ago. It was lovely to see people sharing house plans, celebrating submitted DAs, and an overall feeling of rebuilding and restoration was felt throughout the night. The time capsule was committee member Kara Welch's idea with the intention being that participants write letters to their future self, children, friends or neighbours. Many people commented that they loved the idea, and judging by how many envelopes are in the box the re-opening party should be a good one. The capsule will be buried and then opened in 2024 on the fifth anniversary. A memorial photo of South Arm Local Chris Savva was unveiled and will proudly hang in the hall to honour "a good mate". Chris tragically lost his life in the aftermath of the fire and thoughts are with his family and friends during this difficult time. Some attendees were grateful for the opportunity to share happy times with their community again. "Thanks to all who organised a lovely afternoon. So nice to see so many happy smiling faces. The children in the hall was such a treat. The food was excellent, company great - what more but to say thankyou to all involved," South Arm resident Anama Tesser said.
