His fascination with the movies started when he was 12 and he took a job as the lolly boy at a cinema in Parramatta.
John and Janette began leasing the Kinema 10 years ago from the School of Arts and since then have made many improvements to its operation.
These include also leasing what was the old town library to form the second boutique cinema for more art house films, the move to digital, and the introduction of the Metropolitan Opera and National Theatre screenings, one of only a handful of cinemas in NSW doing so.
John spoke about the challenges of being independent cinema operators in a constantly changing industry, many of them seemingly to the detriment of the small operator.
He made everyone appreciate how fortunate a community of our size is to still have a cinema and the need to ensure its continued survival by becoming regular patrons, if not already.
John then entertained everyone over dinner with a movie trivia quiz, where the challenge was to match the original names of movie stars with their screen names. Movie tragics Peter Bull and Ian Thomlinson emerged the victors.
Last week Narooma Rotarians welcomed new member Michael O’Connor and his wife Donna to the Club, with Assistant Governor Vere Gray as the Club’s special guest.
