Moruya Speedway also hosted the first round of the Country Series for Legend Cars. It was fantastic to see our own “local legend” Jeff Murphy taking the opportunity to slip on the overalls again and have a go at one of these little babies.
The Legend Cars finished the meeting with an exciting 20 lap feature that kept the crowd entertained. These are a new development series, and if you speak with any of the drivers or fans, they’ll tell you what an addictive form of motor sport these little racers are.
The Moruya Speedway Club also held their major fundraising event with proceeds of $1,000 going to Moruya Oncology Unit. There was plenty of pink with Dennis and Rhonda Sheather manning the front gate as usual and kicking off the day’s theme with pink race programs.
Even the cars “wore” pink and we thank everyone for their involvement on the day.
Despite the volunteer’s best efforts with watering and track preparation starting at 7am, the track was a little challenging at times with the wind drying the surface as quickly as Harold was able to get water onto it. This created some dusty racing conditions followed by a few slippery moments and then some dusty ones, however die-hard fans and spectators stuck it out and were rewarded with some great racing.
The first division out were the under 1600’s sponsored by Shell Moruya. As always some good clean racing with Nowra veteran Dennis Richardson taking out the win, followed by Moruya locals John Meyer in second and Nick Bussa in third place.
The Speedway Karts dashed around the track putting it all on the line finishing as follows: Standard and Modified Karts first Ian Riley, second Mitch Coulson, third Jade Lasker.
A large field of Super Production cars rumbled out onto the track and as always these boys produced some great action packed racing. A few mechanical failures followed by a spectacular crash near turn two had flagman Tom Butler on his toes and put out the remaining Series drivers. Unfortunately Todd Baxter was also collected in the carnage, leaving a reduced field to battle it out in the feature race. In a photo finish the results by a blinker were first Daryl Moon of Bega, second Narooma local Wayne Healey and third Shane Jensen of Bodalla.
Next out were the Formula 500’s, these “Pocket Rockets” really are a sight to see and they didn’t disappoint with a nice field on show. The feature race was won by Paul Gray, second B Broadbent and third T Randel. Sadly there weren’t enough Aussie Sixes or ladies entered to run separate divisions this meeting, so the girls were matching it with the boys in Combined Drivers.
Sarah Eastman of Bega represented the fairer sex well with a great second overall, while local Narooma rookie Kath Healey came in fourth in her new car Loui the Laser after some handling issues. As always Johnny Ralph was impressive in his Aussie Six taking out the win with Nick Bussa in third position overall.
The Speedway Karts were next up featuring the Outlaws and 125’s. First Glen Corish, second Ian Rocket Roxburgh, third Brandon Corish, a great effort fellas and top racing.
Organising and running a race meeting doesn’t just happen, so please remember many hands make light work. If you are able to offer a small amount of your time to help the club and take the load off others, feel free to speak with Kay or any of our committee members.
The next race meeting is Saturday, March 8, racing starts at 4pm with full canteen facilities available. Turn off opposite Moruya Airport, bring along your cushion or chair and settle in for a great evening of family fun and entertainment at Moruya Speedway.
