But the report turned out to be a false alarm.
Marine Rescue Bermagui was the first respond after a visitor to town called 000 just before 3pm to report seeing a person on a sailboard or windsurfer in trouble about 500 metres off cliffs that he saw from the look-out at the Blue Pool.
Bermagui’s rescue vessel was the first on the scene motoring out from the harbour to start the search.
The Marine Rescue unit at Narooma was called in sending their vessel NA30 down in some very rough seas with a strong southerly blowing.
The Narooma unit also sent down its two Jetskis by road and these were launched at the Bermagui Harbour boat ramp to participate in the search.
The Bermagui Surf Life Saving Club also launched its rubber duck boat and volunteer Rob Shaw said a search was conducted in the waters off Blue Pool area.
The caller who alerted authorities was an experienced water skier and said he saw someone on a sail board in trouble attempting to pull up the sail.
A search of car parks at nearby beaches for a vehicle possibly connected with the sailboarder was conducted but it was assumed either the sighting was false or that the sail boarder was able to make it back to shore unassisted.
The search was called off at around 5pm.
