The idea was born when festival organiser, Neil Mumme approached Narooma’s Australia Day citizen of the year, Judy Glover about creating some decorations for the Blues Festival.
Judy was involved in last year’s Oyster Festival and helped make the whale tail and kites that were on display.
Narooma High School students helped Judy with the Oyster Festival project so she decided to approach the high school to see if they would be willing to help out again.
Facilitator Judy approached Narooma High School teacher Sue Fahey about the textile students being involved in making banners for the Blues Festival and the project started about two months ago.
Teachers Sue Fahey and Deb Tibbs along with community helpers Judy Glover, Chris Perrott and Megan Fraser oversaw the student’s design and production of the banners.
“All the students contributed their own ideas and they were really fabulous and a pleasure to work with,” Judy said.
The tie-dyed banners are decorated with designs of blues festival crowd scenes, musical notes and treble clefts made of chenille and buttons and digital images of musicians playing the blues.
Blues Festival organiser, Neil Mumme said that he was thrilled with the banners.
“I just think it’s wonderful that we have such great artistic skills and talent among our students and we should take every opportunity to encourage them to pursue their art.
“It’s a very important part of our culture that sometimes gets neglected,” he said.
