Rob Pollock, the chairman of Moruya Cancer Carers, a major fundraising group for the new unit, said the fit-out of the unit began this week.
“My understanding is that the oncology unit will be completed by the end of May and that it will be opened at the same time as the adjoining Renal Unit, about the middle of the year,” he said.
The story of Moruya residents Bob and Glenda Scott revealed what can happen when tests are required using uncommon equipment.
Linda Nolasco, the nurse unit manager at Moruya Hospital’s existing oncology unit, says the number of PETscanners in Sydney has just increased from two to three.
“They are rare,” she said.
“There is only one in Canberra and it can’t cope with demand. We have problems getting a quick scan.”
Ms Nolasco, who works in an old building that can be crowded and uncomfortable for patients, says she is looking forward to the opening of the new unit, which will cater for patients who require certain types of chemotherapy treatment.
