The 72-year-old Coolagolite man was lucky to be rescued when his wife noticed after one-and-a-half hours that he had failed to return from checking on the cows on their property off the Bermagui Cobargo Road.
Police said the man and his dog had ventured near a cow and her newborn calf at 9am Sunday when she became protective, facing them down.
She knocked the man to the ground, trampling him causing significant injuries, including possible broken bones.
The wife subsequently located him and Ambulance paramedics arrived a short time later, however faced with protective cow, they decided to call in support from police.
The VRA rescue squad from Bega was also called in to assist but may not have been required, while the man received treatment and was later transported to hospital.
