Firstly, naming of these rescue vessels after people is apparently quite unusual but in this case it seems perfectly appropriate given the great personality and dedication of the man himself – John Young.
While publicly voicing his opposition to this naming honour, we can only hope he gains some from strength and it is a fitting tribute that his name will go on working our local waters.
It is reassuring as a boater to have such a capable, fast response vessel and if anything happens to a larger vessel like a charter boat, then there is always to BG30 – the larger Bermagui rescue vessel that itself was only commissioned last year.
Speaking of being out on the water, it was a fantastic, if slightly scary, experience to swim Montague Island.
Winter swimmers around Australia have picked up on our tweets and it is possible that we could have some extra visitors, in addition to the Bermagui swimmers, next year if the event catches on.
Finally, let’s hope you can get out and get involved with the NAIDOC Week activities we previewed in this week’s paper.
