GOODNESS, it is August already. The month of July has flown and it was "bigger than Ben Hur" in many respects. Lots of rain, the new bridge opened at the 8th hole and board meetings and lots of golf. However, what about the blue moon? More on that later.

Postscript with respect to my Interview with Brendan Warby
I overlooked one important point in last week’s interview with our new course superintendent and that was in relation to the contribution of volunteers at Narooma. Volunteers, as Brendan pointed out to me, are integral to the up keep and maintenance of many gardens and other areas of the course. Additionally, members of the match and course committees are important to the running of competitions and liaising with Colin Holmes, members of the board and full time staff at Narooma. These men and women contribute considerable time and effort to the game. There are too many to mention, but thanks everyone for your efforts in a range of tasks from publicity to maintenance.
Thursday's Stableford Competition
It was a cold start to the day and a mere three degrees at 8am but warming up to 17 around the middle of the day. In A grade Terence O'Callaghan took out first prize with 40 points and he was just ahead of the consistent Chris Brown and local musician and vocalist, Glenn Mood. Bob Bennett had 37 points to win B grade, whereas Harold Mackie scored in C grade with 39 points.
Friday the Veterans were on at Bermagui but I was a scratching unfortunately. The results are in the pipeline and I may have them for you next week.
The big event on Friday, July 31 was the blue moon! That refers of course to the rare occasion of two full moons in one calendar month. The next blue moon will be in January 2018. While listening to Radio National I heard the classic tune of the same name from 1946 sung by Peggie Lee. What a beautiful voice and what a great song from the past.
Friday afternoon Chook Run
Simon Carr asked me to mention the increasingly popular Friday afternoon Chook run. This is a 6 hole competition with the accent on fun! It is gaining "cult like status" according to many and from 2pm, for $5 / $10 non-members, it is a chance to unwind and have a go at the front six holes at Narooma. That leaves plenty of time for a drink and special prizes to be awarded as well.
Saturday's Monthly Medal Stroke Event
Clear skies dominated the morning although some high scattered cloud and gusty northerly and northwesterly winds made for a challenging day for the August monthly medal. I "had a Ricky Stuart", that is a groin injury, and failed to complete five holes. Bugger!
Apparently it got to 18 degrees but it was one of those windy days when I was glad I wasn't teaching year nine athletics. Teenagers and windy days did not mix in my teaching experiences.
Anyhow, the scores suggest it was hard going as no one beat par. The A grade winner was Ted Poczyhajlo with a net 74 and he had the same score as the B grade and overall Monthly medal winner, Chris Eardley. Congratulations go to Chris who is certainly going through a purple patch of form, unlike Robert Allenby. In C grade Gordon Bird won with a net 75 and in the ladies, Diana Williamson took the honours with a net 78.
I hope you all have a good week and I will catch you again soon.
Regards and good health, Bill Baker
