There were 29 swimming at Narooma and the water was 18 degrees for the standard swim across Bar Beach to the shark net where the traditional joke was told by Mark “Podge” Rogerson.
After exiting the water, the swimmers warmed up with hot drinks supplied by Ray “Thirsty” Hirst, who also calls in the presence of the swimmers in the channel to Marine Rescue Narooma.
The swimmers then enjoyed a full English breakfast back at O’Briens Hotel and the Raw Prawn Bistro where there was short fine session in the absence of fine master Brent “Locko” Lockton. The Narooma swimmers meet at the south end of Bar Beach every Sunday at 9am and all are welcome.
Down at Bermagui, seven swimmers took the winter plunge at the Blue Pools ocean baths. Here is the full report from Blue Balls scribe Robert Johnson:
A mid week inspection of the financial records of the Bermagui Blue Balls revealed a potential salary cap breach. The matter has been referred to the Confederation Regulating Aquatic Pastimes (CRAP) for adjudication.
To avoid any sort of controversy, financial penalty and loss of competition points the decision was made to indefinitely suspend the club's founder, mentor and inspiration, Gary Pearse and his mascot the beloved two blue exercise balls. Their place was capably filled by the two blue pointy-shaped buoys, also known as the Pointer Sisters.
Pointer Sister designer and fabricator, Medici Olmstead was delighted with this decision. On Mother's Day, May 8, one Blue Pointer (female swimmer), two Blue Bottles (junior swimmers) and four Blue Balls (male swimmers) enjoyed a spell binding swim and exploration of Blue Pool's marine marvels.
Mid swim one of the Blue Bottles asked,“Can anyone hear music?” Some how during construction of the Pointer Sisters, Medici had ingeniously installed a nano device which when activated by wave action broadcast a rendition of “I'm so Excited”.
However rather than use the version made popular by Anita, June and Ruth Pointer, Medici had implanted Pamela Rabe's interpretation from the 1996 Australian movie, “Cosi”.
This brilliant master stroke perfectly reflects the enthusiasm shown by some of our swimmers in mid winter. Much of our Sunday get together is all about the after swim food and an attempt is made to keep the blue theme running.
Currently there is a new craze rippling through Bermagui, which comprises fig and walnut sour dough from Honorbread bakery and a slab of Tilba blue cheese.
This scrummy treat was eagerly devoured as we reviewed our swim location options for the next 17 weeks. Also discussed was our assistance with staging of the ocean swim in the far south coast's premier community participation and wellness event, ReBoot Bermagui, being held September 24-25.
So if you're intrigued in a Sunday morning swim at different locations in our gorgeous locale, unique after swim treats, hearty laughter and the occasional shiver then bring your togs, robust constitution and sense of humour to Blue Pool at 9am next Sunday.
