The envisaged educational enrichment and community development project, with point of difference, was epitomised by the synthesis of Bodalla, Narooma, Bermagui, Central Tilba and Cobargo Public Schools, Narooma High School Year 11 art class, Year 10 work experience students, Sista Speak students, and students involved in the Partnerships in Industry and Education (PIE) program.
This cohort of students and artists was facilitated by Lin Schroder, art teacher from Narooma High School, keeping in close contact with Chris Tague, Eurobodalla Shire Council facilities management coordinator and ANU arts educator Amelia Zaraftis.
More than 50 indigenous and non-indigenous students from the area had the profound experience of working with the “artists in residence” on site and to be a strategic part of raising awareness of the local and indigenous heritage to heighten cultural confidence and form a bond and ownership of the cultural landscape in the area.
Support for the project has been exemplary, including contributions from the Country Area Support Program Grant, Eurobodalla Shire Council, ANU Regional Partnerships Program, Southern Area Catchment Authority, Narooma Sporting and Services Club, Mitre 10 Narooma, and Casey’s Café Narooma, Narooma High School of Excellence Program and Narooma High School Parents and Citizens Association.
Voluntary groups and individuals involved include the Narooma Amateur Swimming Club and the YMCA.
The launch for the opening of the mural will be Saturday, December 15, from 11am to 2pm.
The sponsors will be supporting the event with jumping castle and food stalls. All welcome to participate in this unique event.
