The girls chosen include Nyeasha Hoskins-Moore from Narooma, Nakia Stewart of Kianga and Tasharna Nye of Moruya, while boys selected include Clyde Parsons-Campbell and Marcus Lonsdale-Patten both of Narooma.
The girls and boys leave on Tuesday to spend a week intensive training with NRL staff and teachers where they will participate in TAFE courses, training and games.
“We are extremely proud of their achievements,” Aboriginal Education Officer at Narooma High School, Cherrie Morley said.
Nyeasha Hoskins-Moore, aged 16 and in Year 10 at Narooma High School, played for the trophy winning Narooma Devils U16 Junior League Team this year and most recently was invited to play with a women’s Rugby 7s side from Batemans Bay this weekend.
She and some of the others selected for the Koori camp also travelled to the west of NSW to play in the PCYC Nations of Origin tournament, where the local team were named runners-up after losing by only a few points in the grand final.
Her mother Mary Moore lamented who few opportunities there were for young female rugby league players who wanted to make a career out of the sport.
“She’s played with the Devils for most of her life as she started out really young,” Mrs Moore said. “Being selected for the Koori academy is great because this could be her big opportunity to get where she wants to in rugby league.”
