The Bermagui Breakers Aussie Rules Football Club is back, says club president Phil Summerfield.
Senior members have been training since the start of December and numbers are growing as the season nears.
“Mate, we had 22 on the track last night,” Summerfield beams, “We’ve got a dozen ladies having a run around as well.
“We had a lull last year, but we’re back.”
The club will also be looking to enter a reserve grade team for the first time in three years.
Summerfield said the club had welcomed some impressive inclusions to the roster, like reigning league best and fairest – Scott Proctor, who coached the Pambula Panthers last year.
Meanwhile, Rob Beauzeville has signed on as coach and will have Proctor and Marcus Shaw running as assistant coaches.
Summerfield said things were already looking good for the club and it was hard not to be excited with the season still a couple of months away.
“We struggled with numbers a bit last year, but with the return of Marcus, he’s got everyone up and buzzing, he’s a great kid,” he said.
“Then we’ve got the older brigade of Luke Moresi and Paul Lazzaro who haven’t started their training run yet, but will walk in and have these talented kids around them.”
Summerfield said the duo were likely to act as leadership figures for the young group as the club welcomes a number of young guns for 2017.
“We’ve got some really gun juniors coming in – Marcus, Daniel Smith, Ryan Summerfield, Jack Hannerbury, Sam O'Connor and Jack Dobell are just a few giving us a boost.”
The captaincy of the team was an honour given to Josh Humphreys.
“Josh has been a local junior and played the last few years in seniors, he’s rock hard, committed and he leads from the front,” Summerfield said.
The incoming president said there was massive potential for the club given renewed vigor.
“I won’t talk about flags, but we’re excited for the chance to return to finals footy,” he said.
He said the club is seeking all interested junior players for under 16s, but was eager to welcome anyone that wanted to play.
“We would absolutely encourage anyone who wants to have a go to come along and join us,” he said.
Breakers Training is at Dickinson Oval on Mondays and Wednesdays from 5.45pm.
