South Coast Health and Sustainability Alliance (SHASA) message gets out

Last week Kathryn Maxwell of SHASA presented information sessions at the Eurobodalla Libraries in Batemans Bay, Narooma and Moruya on how to “save energy in your home”.

Kathryn who previously worked in renewable energy for state governments and local councils, is now an active community member of SHASA, the South Coast Health and Sustainability Alliance. SHASA are coordinating the Eurobodalla community solar bulk buy. 

Kathryn covered a range of energy efficiency actions which can be easily implemented in your home to save energy and save you money by reducing your electricity bills. 

Heating and cooling which usually make up to 40 per cent of household energy use, may be reduced by installing a reverse cycle air conditioner with a 5/6 star rating.

Kathryn also recommended improving window insulation by installing full-length curtains and pelmets. Water heating costs which make up about 20 per cent of household energy use can be reduced by installing solar hot water or a hot water heat pump. 

Appliances and equipment including refrigeration and cooking use approx. 33 per cent household energy.

Kathryn discussed the most efficient fridges/freezers and televisions plus NSW government grants available to some NSW residents to upgrade their fridge and TV to new energy efficient appliances. 

For household lighting Kathryn recommended replacing all light bulbs with LED lights. All residents who attended Kathryn’s presentation received one free LED light bulb donated by the NSW government Office of Environment and Heritage. 

Kathryn also recommended SHASA’s community solar bulk buy to help residents in the Eurobodalla reduce their ongoing electricity costs.
