Bermagui meanwhile hosts the 28th Alliance Tag & Release Tournament, which is a collaboration between the Bermagui Big Game Anglers Club, the Canberra Game Fishing Club, the Victorian Game Fishing Club and the Latrobe Valley Game Fishing Club. Good luck to all the competitors and let’s hope the sea conditions improve!
The recent rain is most welcome by all the fish in the estuaries that have been suffering in the heat and drought.
We hear that Corunna Lake is not fishing so well and actually has a big population of octopus that are showing up in locals’ crab pots. They must be dominating the lake, as they have not been getting any crabs and we know that crabs are an octopus's favourite food!
Tilba fisherman Ron Snape had a good haul from Tilba Beach, right up in south end and almost out of the wind. Not bad salmon to 2.5kg on metals, while the tailor and bream were on pilchard. Ron reckons now is a great time to sit at the estuary mouths and give the jewfish a go, a great time also for big tailor.
“This is what commercial fishos call ‘travelling season’,” he said “This is the time when a lot of estuarine species do their thing and look to move north on mass before winter sets in. They travel north to spawn as well their larvae and juveniles return in the spring when warm waters return. This is around the time when the whales start the southern migration.”
NSGFC ANSA Convention – Narooma Sport and Game Fishing Club is pleased to announce its 47th Annual Australian National Sportfishing Association’s Convention, starting on Friday, March 10, with final weigh-in on Sunday at 1pm.
Attracting over 120 anglers and their families every March, this is by far the biggest competition the club holds, catering from Thursday evening through to Sunday lunch. The clubhouse is full in the evenings with its licensed bar open, nightly raffles and fun giveaways entertaining the crowd .
Fishing can be from the rocks, beach, in the estuaries or outside in the bluewater. Tagging, catch-and-release and weighing-in are all options with 23 great prizes presented 2pm Sunday. Value of prizes and giveaways is over $10,000.
The ANSA convention is steeped in history with a humble beginning at Mystery Bay, launching the boats off the beach in 1969, to our now proud clubhouse overlooking Forsters Bay. In its heyday, it attracted over 2000 competitors, boosting Narooma’s economy and exposing this beautiful area.
Hundreds of people liked what they saw and experienced, returning to Narooma for annual holidays or becoming permanent residents. Although not in those numbers anymore, NSGFC still likes to think it contributes towards Narooma’s reputation as a fishing mecca.
Local business houses are tremendous in their support towards the convention, making the prize pool for both the division winners and raffle prizes exceptional. “We are grateful for their support and we do everything possible to give them exposure and increased traffic from local residents and the visiting anglers during the convention and for the next 12 months.” Local anglers are welcome, with information on NSGFC’s Facebook site or via Les on 0411 392 608. Visitors always welcome with the clubhouse open daily through the convention from 3.30pm, and from 11am on Sunday. Drinks and meals for sale.
Three NSGFC members ventured out on Wagonga Inlet on Wednesday had a good day. There was plenty of baitfish about and they caught a few snapper, bream and trevally but no flathead. – Jan Hemmingsen
BCC Social Anglers – Bermagui Country Club Social Anglers’ Club members will meet again on Sunday for their social barbecue at 12.30pm. The fishing comp carries over from Friday/Saturday and Sunday morning allowing weigh-in for both on and offshore anglers. – On the Drift
