He said a female with an American accent phoned on March 28, purporting to be from the tax office and asked him to ring another phone number.
“I knew it was a scam and I hung up,” he said.
However, he feared vulnerable residents might fall for it.
“Nobody like that (the ATO) contacts you by phone, but unless you are aware of that, you could get caught up,” he warned.
“They do catch people.
“They play on the elderly and where I live, there are lot of elderly people.
“They could be aware of this and honing in.
“The smarties are out there and, on probability, they will catch somebody.”
Another concern was that phone numbers were circulated without permission.
“You don’t how your number gets passed on and people do sell lists of numbers,” he said.
“You support one charity and next minute you get a call from a charity you have never heard of.”
The ATO has warned residents to report such calls.
