The quirky, comedy musical had the audience laughing and applauding and at the end the zombies descended into the crowd to get people dancing up on the stage, including acting principal John Melville.
Lead actor Hayden Ryan had always wanted to perform heavy metal music and he did well to play the lead of Zombio with guitar strung over his shoulder ready to launch into tunes at any time.
Leading lady Dayna Lingard and her fellow female actors meanwhile also sang beautifully, although the subject matter was a little gory and ghoulish at times.
After the curtain call, the students recognised drama teacher Rob Rogers and music teacher Dan Efraemson with a couple of bouquets and a large round of applause.
“Congratulations to all those students and staff involved in the musical production on Thursday night. It was an amazing performance by all,” principal Tony Fahey said. “The actors, the band, the singers, the dancers, the stage crew, sound and lighting crew, make-up artists and all the teachers, especially Mr Rogers and Mr Efraemson have done an awesome job!
“Again, congratulations, so proud of you all and would not have missed the show for anything. Well done, from one very proud school principal.”
Staff and students worked on a new script complete with original music for the last two terms in 2016. The show was a madcap journey through Shakespeare’s England….. except with a difference. In Shakespeare’s play Romeo and Juliet, the young heroes die at the end of the story. Not so in this latest version.
In this retelling of Shakespeare’s tale Romeo and Juliet became zombies and search for the author so he can write them a happy ending. There were songs, three of them written by Narooma High School students. The other songs included old favourites like Highway to Hell, Thriller and The Monster Mash. It was an original story written especially for the cast and musicians.
