Local Yuin people, culture and language will be celebrated in Central Tilba with an exhibition in the village and an open day at the registered Aboriginal owners’ property, ‘Bellbrook’.
At the Central Tilba Small Hall on Saturday, July 8 from 9am to 1pm, there will be a pop-up exhibition that will feature work by Yuin artists just back from the NAIDOC Week “Blak Market” at Barangaroo in Sydney, and by children from the Central Tilba Public School and Little Yuin Preschool.
The exhibition coincides with the CWA’s regular pop-up morning tea. The NAIDOC theme this year is “Our Languages Matter”, so the exhibition will include a Dhurga language display.
Dhurga is the first language of the NSW South Coast between Wandandean, Braidwood and Wallaga Lake. This is a joint initiative of local residents and the Gulaga National Park Board of Management to create opportunities for the wider community to meet Yuin people and learn more about their language, art and cultural landscape.
Since the handback of the Gulaga and Biamanga National Parks to the Yuin people in 2006, the parks have been managed by their Boards of Management in partnership with NSW National Parks and Wildlife Services.
The boards meet at the registered Aboriginal owners’ property ‘Bellbrook’, 106 Corkhill Drive, Central Tilba. “Bellbrook” will be open to the public on Saturday, July 8, from 9am to 3pm. Walawaani Njindiwan is the Dhurga greeting meaning safe journey to and from, everyone.
