Bombala will be the outside favourite for the Group 16 first grade premiership, locking in a major semi-final draw after downing the Merimbula-Pambula Bulldogs at the Bombala Showground on Sunday.
The Blue Heelers proved too strong a nut to crack on their home turf, sending the Bulldogs away with a loss 40-18 after some blinding left and right edge runs in the first half.
The result was hard to swallow for the Bulldogs, who had a rough weekend, also going down in the reserve grade clash to Bega 32-8 (with a second chance in another elimination final), while the league-tag Hot Doggies will also need a second chance to reach the grand final, suffering a 14-0 loss to the Moruya Sharkettes.
It was a joyous weekend for the Bega Roosters, advancing to the next round in all four senior grades.
The under 18s had a text-book result over the Cooma Stallions 56-8, the league tag Chicks defeated the Cooma Fillies 18-10, the reserves downed the Bull Ants and the first grade contingent ended Moruya’s first grade campaign – 44-12.
In other matches, The Sharks kept their chances alive in reserves, claiming the day 26-20 over the Cooma Stallions after both teams had some surging runs in Saturday’s elimination round at Bega on Saturday.
And the Batemans Bay under 18s scored a two-point win over the Narooma Devils in a hard-fought and speedy game in blustery winds at Bombala 22-20.
Cooma’s first grade, Bombala ladies, the Candelo-Bemboka Reserves and the Merimbula-Pambula under 18s were the minor premiers and will go into major semi-final draws next weekend.
Grounds for next weekend’s clashes are yet to be announced and will be published beforehand.
