The South Nowra jail holds prisoners from the Eurobodalla and Far South Coast.

Contraband was found in the jail in a police raid as recently as November – it is not uncommon for police raids to result in the discovery of drugs, weapons and other banned items.

However, Kiama MP Gareth Ward does not believe there is a contraband problem at the facility.

“These things will happen from time to time, but we haven’t seen very serious situations at South Nowra, in the likes of what has happened at other prisons,” Mr Ward said.

“The Nowra facility is one of the best in the state.”

Mr Ward said he’d be willing to advocate for more stringent checks for those visiting inmates, if it was necessary.

“We have very strict checks, if you’ve ever been inside a prison you’ll know how strict it is,” he said.

“I will always advocate for most restrictive practices.”

The Public Service Association used the drama that unfolded yesterday at the South Nowra jail to advocate for more corrective service officers.

Mr Ward does not think that is required.

“I’m sure the PSA would love more members,” he said.

“No one has suggested to me there is a lack of staff, we’ve increased the number of officers at Nowra.”

“I believe our officers are doing an incredible job.”
