A Eurobodalla Shire Council spokesperson said the Dalmeny and Mystery Bay campgrounds reached capacity between Christmas and New Year. Sites at both campgrounds were just becoming available again.
The Narooma Visitor Information Centre is now run by the Montague Arts and Crafts Society and manager Chris Macauley said the centre was particularly busy between Christmas and New Year.
School holidays had started a week earlier in 2017, which may have encouraged visitor numbers to be spread over the holiday period. Visitors may also be choosing to travel in less busy times.
Ms Macauley said the peak period for the centre came on Wednesday, January 3, when about 150 people came through the door between 1pm and 3pm. On most days, about 400 people visited the centre.
Finding everyone accommodation was a challenge, but she said providers were working well with the centre to let them know when rooms or campsites became available.
The crowds have thronged to supermarkets and eateries, which all reported a good season for shopping and eating out.
“I have not had a chance to look up; we’ve been flat out and we’ve gotten smashed,” Narooma Ice Creamery owner Kristy Beecham said.
However, fishing conditions have not been ideal.
The Narooma Ocean Hut Compleat Angler staff noticed a drop in business due to the lack of prawns in the lakes, the kingfish not coming on at Montague Island and the beaches flat.
They are all hoping the fishing improves so visitors are attracted out of the busy season.
