One of the first jobs for the new scouts will no doubt be to remove the unsightly graffiti.
New Scout leader Ross Tornabene is asking for parents and children aged between 10 and 15 to come along for a free “Try Scouting” night from 6.30pm to 8pm on Wednesday, February 14.
It’s all happening at the 1st Narooma Scout Group Hall on Taylor Lane, which can be accessed from Taylor Street behind Bill Smyth Oval.
Mr Tornabene has a wealth of experience most recently with the combined Moruya/Batemans Bay troop, and for the last two years has been a Venturer Scout leader working with youngsters between 14 and 18 years of age.
He is a Narooma resident and so jumped at the chance to be a scout leader in his hometown. He has also been a member of the Volunteer Rescue Association back in the days of former leader Neville Gough.
“I’ve done heaps of hiking, camping and expeditions with the Scouts over the years,” he said.
He has gone on wilderness walks in New Zealand, Tasmania and NSW, most recently going on 18-day walk across the Australian Alps from Falls Creek to Mount Kosciuszko.
And a few weeks ago, he participated in the Cobargo and Merimbula troop’s four-day, 103km canoe paddle down the Murray River.
“Fun, friends, excitement and adventure - scouts has all that - from ‘traditional scouting skills’ through to more extreme challenges such as abseiling, overnight hiking, rafting, canoeing, canyoning, snow activities, rock climbing, sailing and even flying.”
Children aged 6 – 10 are also welcome. If there is enough interest we may be able to get a Cub Scout pack established also!
