Join your friends, family, workmates, cancer survivors, and their carers, and thousands of other Australians to achieve the common goal of celebrating life, creating hope and beating cancer.
This year, the Eurobodalla Relay For Life will take place on Saturday, April 7 from 2pm finishing Sunday, April 8 at 10am at Bill Smyth Oval, Narooma. Yes, there is a new starting time of 2pm!
Relay For Life is a community fundraising challenge for Cancer Council. Teams of friends, families and colleagues raise money in the lead up to an overnight event, where team members take turns walking around a track to signify that cancer never sleeps.
Community Engagement Coordinator from Cancer Council Southern Region, Kate Brett said Relay For Life was very family friendly, with games and activities, delicious food, and entertainment throughout the entire event.
“Cancer Council NSW is over 95 per cent community funded,” Ms Brett said. “We are the only cancer charity which works across every aspect of the cancer journey.
We not only support those in the community who are affected by cancer today, but work towards the prevention and management of cancer services in the future. I am excited to see the community come together and support each other once again.
The funds raised from the Eurobodalla Relay For Life in 2017 have contributed to the running a dedicated Eurobodalla Transport to Treatment service.
The car has already clocked up over 12,000kms transporting patients to appointments throughout the Eurobodalla and further afield to Canberra and Nowra, she said.
The success of the Eurobodalla Relay For Life and other Relays across NSW allows Cancer Council to fund research into new and innovative ways of treating and preventing a number of cancers such as melanoma, breast and bone cancer.
Locally, our fundraising contributes to maintaining prevention programs across the Eurobodalla including; “Sun Sound” in local pools and “Improve Your Long Game” at Narooma Golf Club.
These skin cancer prevention programs work together with the nutrition program “Eat it to Beat it” to promote a healthy, cancer conscious lifestyle among the community.
“With an estimated 134,000 new cases of cancer expected to be diagnosed in Australia this year, we need every Australian to rally behind Relay For Life to help continue this vital work,” Ms Brett said.
“Everyone is welcome at Relay, no matter your age or ability. You can take part however you like by walking, jogging, running, wheeling or even dancing – it’s your Relay For Life!”
Here’s what else you can expect at Relay:
- Survivors of cancer and their carers are the heart of every Relay, so each Relay begins with a lap around the track in their honour.
- Teams of Relayers pass a baton as they keep someone on the track at all times, day and night.
- In between laps, experience all the activities you can enjoy such as entertainment from local performers, market stalls, competitions and games for the whole family.
- At sunset, we light up the darkness in memory of those we’ve lost during our candlelight ceremony.
- Inspiring speakers then give us hope for a cancer-free future by sharing important updates about the advancements in Cancer Council’s work.
- At the end of the Relay, we hold a closing ceremony that celebrates our incredible achievements and motivates us all to continue the fight against cancer.
“With a wonderful venue, excellent entertainment and fabulous food all we need is you!” Ms Brett said.
