Dalmeny Men
Due to the Goose flying off to Sydney this week he suffered a major senior’s moment and forgot to press the send button on last week’s report although he made sure the photos were there and hopefully will be there this week.

An abbreviated precis of week ending March 11 results is that on Monday the winners were decided by the lowest winning margin, Towelling Dowling, Clive KV and Pat, Ron, Jim or Harold. Runners-up were Shark Finn, Cobber Dudley and the Macedonian Illya with the resting toucher going to Towelling Lewis and the $210 jackpot didn’t go off.
Thursday had secret ends deciding the winners in John V-him- heaven and the Bardrim couple Richard and Cheryl in a countback from the runners-up in Mayoress Olwyn, Lois Mac or Greg and the Macedonian Illya. Olwyn took out the resting toucher and the $389 jackpot was won to the delight of one of the previous winners.
Friday’s twilight’s had Sailor Marty and Don Sienna as winners from the runners-up in Ian IOU and Bob Less with Don taking out the resting toucher.
In the 5th round of the pennants Dalmeny at home to Moruya sadly went down again by 11 shots, rinks ½ and the points 1/9 spoiling any chance of making the play-offs.
The final of the Minor Singles Championship on Sunday saw Brett or Graham up relentless against Hottie Smith cruising to a well-deserved 32/16 win after 35 ends. Congratulations to Brett and commiserations to Bernie who I’m sure will be pleased to know that he’ll never have to play against Brett in the minor singles next year. Well done to all who participated and like Bernie you’ll have another chance next year.
Monday’s grey skies stayed that way all afternoon for the 36 bowlers with Shark Finn doing the cards and with the winners decided by the lowest winning margin which saw those on 3 being Account Cartwright, Laughing Lloyd and the Goose from the runners up on 4 in Chef Keith, Cobber Peter and Punter Alan. Young Account Drury took out the resting toucher but the $246 jackpot didn’t go off. Wrong bias sinners were Dipper Ron, Steal Coulson (2) and Ex.PM Neil while the raffle winners were Alan, a backroom visitor, Ian Eastoff and Barry Arminter.
Book results only for Thursday with the Goose away which had the lowest winning margin on 8 as the winners in Mayoress Olwyn, Dine-back Brooker and Dipper Ron and runners-up in Snoopy Leigh, Cobber Peter and Chef Keith with Peter taking out the first resting toucher but the $100 jackpot didn’t go off.
Our second last Friday twilight bowls had our numbers bolstered by the boys from Griffith Bowling Club and with 20 players on the green saw our visitors in the money with them taking out the winner’s prize also AD sharing with Check Dudley for the runners up with Bob Less taking out the resting toucher. Our last game of the 17/18 season next week due to Good Friday but don’t forget our presentation night with nibbles on the 6 th April.
Our No.5 pennants boys had a fine win away against Tuross winning 2/1 rinks and the points 9/1. Don’t forget to get your names down for the Major Singles Championship this week for the draw on Thursday.
Narooma Men
Men’s Social bowls Wednesday 14th March. Another fun day was had by all with the ‘lowest winning margin’ winners being Gary Evans & Mike Knight (skip) on +4 over Tony Fryer and T. Rogers (skip). Runners up with +6 were Al Chisholm & Peter ‘Spike’ Jones over Ron Douglas & Rod Holman (skip). Resting toucher was won by Scotty Kennedy. Thanks to our sponsors Rapleys Meats & Narooma District Funerals.
Men’s Social Pairs bowls Saturday 17th March. Good turn-up with 16 players on 4 rinks on a very sunny afternoon. Winners for the ‘lowest winning margin’ were P.Townend & Ray Gale (skip) on +2 with B.Rapkins and Leo Winter (skip) with +3.
Pennants Grade 6. This team continues to shine with a hard fought win over Moruya. The visitors shot out of the blocks to take an early lead but were slowly pegged back with Narooma eventually winning 2 rinks to 1 (59-50 overall). This gave Narooma 9 points to 1 competition points win to stay on top of the Grade 6 ladder. An outstanding game from skip John Downie saw his team (Ron Douglas, Jeff Iles & John McNamara) winning by 10 points 26-16, the highest margin for the day. Also in the winners circle, but by only 1 point was Tony Palmer and his team of Alan Chisholm, Rod Holman and Brian Seaman by 20-19. A really tight game had Nev Butt and team Les Waldock, Kevin Mitchell & ‘Spike’ Jones eventually lose 13-15. The Grade 4 Pennants side had a bye but many of those players attended to cheer on the Sixes. Thanks guys, really appreciated.
Sunday Mixed Social. A very hot day with 18 bowlers. Three rinks of triples. Due to hot weather and wind we only played ten ends. Winners were determined by Lucky Rink. Winners were Leo Winter (L), Ken Burrows (2nd) & Bruce Rankin who defeated Mavis Hardy (L), Peter Vos; Tony Gors .
Narooma Women
Social bowls winners were selected by lucky rink last Tuesday, with a further examination of cards for rink six revealing a drawn result. Pam Grant and Margaret Naylor (skip) led most of the way in their pairs game, until the 17th end. Then, Jenny Coulson and Annette Linney (skip) claimed the last two ends to level the scores. What a good game! Both teams shared the prizemoney. Merrie Downie won the raffle prize.
Major Singles Championship: Round one matches saw Beverley Bowater defeat Margaret Naylor and Sandra Breust defeat Leila Gosper after both ladies played great bowls. Dawn Kenny had a hard match against Annette Linney, who took the lead early in warm, humid conditions. Following a determined fight back, Dawn took control, going on to win the match, despite Annette’s late push. Next round matches due to be played on Friday promise to be interesting.
Tuross Head Men
The title aspirations of both Tuross Head Men’s Bowling Club’s Pennant sides were dented during Round 6 of the competition. The faint hopes of the Grade 5 side were dashed when they were well beaten at home by Dalmeny. The bogey of Braidwood struck again with the Grade 7 side making another unsuccessful trip up ‘the Clyde’!
After two good wins the Grade 5 side approached their match with Dalmeny with confidence and a faint chance of grabbing the flag. This was soon extinguished as the Dalmeny sides grabbed match winning leads on two of the three rinks. New skip, Peter Wood, had a baptism of fire with his team down 17 – 2 after 9 ends. They did rally but went down 27 -13. It was a similar story on John Fahey’s rink. They were outclassed on the early ends and were down 10 – 1 after 7 ends. They struggled to get into the game, and although only conceding low scores, they were beaten 22 – 12. Joel Hilliard’s rink was the only bright light fir Tuross. They held the upper hand for most of the game with Hilliard again leading the way with some masterly bowls. However, the Dalmeny skip was also playing well and he converted some great situations to level the scores at 19 apiece with three to play. Hilliard steadied and picked up 5 shots on the 19th end to regain control and won 28–19. Dalmeny won the match 68 shots to 53 and 9 points to 1.
The Grade 7 side found the Braidwood side too good on all rinks. They lost 79 shots to 36 and 10 points to 0. This means that Braidwood are now only 1 point behind Tuross on the table with three rounds to play. The final round match in Tuross could be the decider! On Saturday the three Tuross teams were well beaten. Ian Wratten’s team lost 25 – 10; Ronnie Richardson lost 32 – 15 and Jim Madden went down 22 -12. The side needs to regroup. They have three rounds to play with two at home starting with Tomakin next week.
Far South Coast District
On March 14-15 the Regional Playoffs for the Triples, Senior Pairs and Open Pairs was played between Bega Imlay, Snowy Mountains and Far South Coast Bowling Districts. The event was played at Bodalla over the two days, where some exceptional bowling was displayed by the competitors.
On the first day Triples were played, and the Tuross Head team of Denise Lidbury, Rose Farrington and Averial Cox were victorious over Adaminaby and Tura Beach.
The second day the Senior Pairs and Open Pairs were decided. In the Open Pairs, Tuross Head team, Sue Fahey and Doreen Monks had the bye in the morning and then defeated Merimbula in the final that afternoon.
In the Senior Pairs, Tomakin team of Jenny Hogan and Milka Starkovski had a bye, then played and were victorious over Cooma in the final.
