Eurobdoalla Shire Council will present free home composting workshops on Friday 6 April and Saturday 7 April at the SAGE Gardens in Moruya.
On completion of the workshop, attendees are entitled to a free home composting kit, including compost bin and kitchen caddy, to get them started with composting at home.
Composting is an easy and effective way of diverting organic products out of the waste stream, while at the same time creating a valuable soil conditioner for the garden.
The council’s waste minimisation officer Adam Patyus said the workshops would demystify composting in a fun and interactive way.
“Composting at home is easy and a very practical way of making a positive difference to the impact we have on our natural environment,” Mr Patyus said.
“The workshops will show how simple it is to develop and maintain an automatic hot composting system.
“The workshops also suit those who have tried composting at home but were not entirely satisfied with the results, with the opportunity to ask questions and learn what they could be doing differently.”
Across Australia more than 50 per cent of material in red-lidded waste bins is organic, much of which could be composted.
“The need to divert this from landfill is important to preserve the available landfill space we have for as long as possible, as access to new sites is extremely costly, both financially and environmentally,” he said.
Numbers for the composting workshops are strictly limited and residents are advised to book early to avoid disappointment.
To book, call 4474 1024. For more information about composting visit the council’s website.
