The Devils led for 77 minutes of the match, only to have victory snatched from them 22-20 just before the bell.
Narooma played their best football of the year with few errors and a determined attitude the order of the day. Tries to Todd Ayers, Ali Elmasri and Ryan Norris and two conversions by Norris had the Devils leading 16-0 after 30 minutes but Bega hit back just before the break to make it 16-6 to the Devils at half-time.
Bega began to grind their way back into the match and scored again after 10 minutes to make it 16-12. Devils hooker Joey Scrymgeour darted over from dummy-half to extend the lead to 20-12 but there was still a long way to go.
A few things started to crack for the Devils. A player was sin-binned, then key players prop Neil Graham and halfback Ryan Norris were forced off with injuries.
All it took was a couple of errors and Bega pounced to score firstly a runaway try from a loose pass and then a try after a penalty to snatch a 22-20 win.
The Devils were disappointed but determined to keep going next week against Moruya at home.
Best for the Devils were captain Todd Ayers, half Ryan Norris and big prop Scott Curry. Lachlan Carey and Ninnum Parsons also had great games.
The Reserves struggled for numbers and several U18s had to back up for them against a very good Bega team. They tried hard but went down 58-6. Stuey Davison was the try scorer. Best for the Devils were Mitch Parsons, Elijah Blair and Jimmy Streater while captain-coach Damien Rotumah played his heart out.
The U18s scored a narrow 14-12 win over Bega. The game was as close as it sounds with both sides defence hard to breach. The Devils didn’t get into their fluent style of play and have room to improve before the semis. Tries were scored by Matt Parsons, Blake Zideluns and Clyde Parsons with Clyde kicking a goal. Best players were Liam Sweeney, Jack Godfrey, Jackson Kelly and Clyde Parsons.
The She-Devils League Tag ladies were up against a sharp Bega Chicks team. Despite going down 18-4 they held their own. Wrylka Colburn scored another of her trademark tearaway tries and was player of the match. Others to play well were Kira Campbell, Renee Hoare and Taliya Smith. Next Sunday the tag girls and the U18s have a week off while the Reserves and Firsts take on Moruya at Bill Smyth Oval.
