Alexander, who was born in Moruya but raised in Tuross Head, moved to Wollongong in 2006 to undertake a double degree in mechanical engineering and physics at the University of Wollongong.
His interest in science from an early age meant it was not surprise when he completed his thesis with honours, and as a result of graduating, secured himself a position at the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation.
During this time, Alexander discovered a love and talent for running through involvement with popular outdoor fitness group, Savvy Fitness.
His consistent training and desire to achieve goals acted as a stepping stone to Alexander’s first triathlon only three years ago, and James has quickly secured a reputation as a strong competitor within the local triathlon community.
With his family by his side, including his two year old son Killian, Alexander has spent the past 12 months competing along with 724 other Australians for a position in the national squad for the World Championships.
Thanks to his dedication, an intense and early morning training schedule with the Sparrows Cycling Club, as well as the guidance of his coaches at B&J Racing, Alexander has successfully secured his position on the team to represent his country in the standard distance, 30-34 age group.
On Sunday, September 16, Alexander will proudly wear his green and gold for the 1500-metre swim, 40-kilometre bike ride, and 10-kilometre run. Whatever the result on the day, his parents Neil and Pam of Tuross Head agree that he has done his family proud, and they are excited to cheer from the side of the track on the day.
Alexander’s goal is to not only compete to his best on the day, but to inspire others (particularly dads) to give their dreams a go.
“I want to show people that you can be a dad, a husband and achieve your own personal achievements,” he said. “It’s about balance, and I am learning that every single day.”
