Each summer Fire and Rescue NSW responds to more than 700 fires in and around the home and firefighters are advising residents to be vigilant during this time.
Narooma Station Captain Dawson said home fire safety was important for the whole family and preparation could prevent a tragedy.
“While you enjoy the precious moments with your loved ones this summer, please don’t be complacent as fires can and do happen,” he said.
“It is really important to keep looking while cooking and minimise the risk of fire around the home
“From all of us at Narooma Fire Station, we wish you a safe and happy holiday season.”
Firefighters are encouraging the community to follow a few simple steps such as:
- Keep looking when cooking - never leave it unattended
- Ensure that cooking appliances are turned off after use
- Service, clean and maintain your barbecue correctly - check cylinders for rust or damage, make sure connections are clear and fit properly, and clean your barbecue regularly
- Never put flammable liquid or accelerants on to a barbecue
- Don’t cook under the influence of alcohol or drugs
- Don’t overload power boards with lights and decorations
- Clean out your gutters and remove piles of rubbish, weeds and leaf matter from around the home to help protect against bushfires
- Before leaving your house and going away on holidays, ensure that your appliances are turned off and that your smoke alarms are working. If you are taking the family on a caravanning holiday, make sure your caravan has a smoke alarm installed
If a fire does occur, get out, stay out and call Triple Zero (000).
