On Saturday, January 26 a crowd of 200 came from Wollongong through to Eden to gather at Dickinson Oval to listen to speakers and watch music. It was hailed by organiser Rodney Kelly as a great day.
“The aim of the event was to bring everyone together to learn more about what’s happened to the First People of this land since 1788 and what the day means to us,” he said.
“It’s a date when we look back in time with great sadness and anger because since the 26th of January 1788 so much culture has been taken away.
“Our culture is the oldest surviving culture in the world, but was never respected from the start.”
Mr Kelly said moving the date of Australia Day would not change anything.
“It’s not just about the date, it’s everything that’s happened to my people since 1788 and it still continues today,” he said.
“We could never celebrate Australia Day.”
