His work mate, Kurt Eldridge has set-up a GoFundMe page to support Mr McNeilly and his partner.
"I heard the news this morning and was pretty shocked," he told Australian Community Media on Friday, June 28.
"He had been knocked out and fractured his skull. He went through serious surgery last night."
Queensland Police on Thursday charged a 19-year-old man with assault after the incident in Surfers Paradise.
Mr McNeilly was holidaying with his partner Justine when the incident occurred.
"He is such a nice person, and was on holidays," Mr Eldridge said.
Mr Eldridge said Mr McNeilly had just started his traineeship at the Eurobodalla Shire Council as an industrial plumber.
