On Saturday a field of 143 played in the first round of the annual Stableford competition and found scoring not difficult.

Division 2 handicap range was 28-45. Once again Prue Barron had a win with a score of 37. Runner up was Laura Taylor with 36 points. Balls to 30 OCB.
Bowls
Narooma Women's Bowling Club
Last Tuesday found a small gathering for morning social bowls. Two games of triples and a pairs match, the format for play was versatility. Bowlers were required to play six ends in each team position.
The team with the lowest winning margin was the method used to determine the winners, found on rink four with a 15 all score. Both teams won an equal number of ends so the prize money was shared between Jenny Coulson, Sue Bender and Marg Naylor (skip) on one side and Carol Douglas, Pam Grant and Sue Wales (skip) on the other. A good result.
Best wishes to Barb McNamara for her birthday on Monday - hope you had a good day. Jan Rapkins demonstrated how 'lucky' she is by winning the 50 Club. Vicki Herman won the meat raffle and Robyn Hazelgrove the fruit tray.
The ladies from Thirroul have been great fun and we look forward to your next visit.
Major singles entrants please check the draw for round one next Thursday.

Social bowls winners' circle
We had a good turnout on Wednesday with 54 bowlers making up nine rinks of triples. Winners were decided by Lucky Rinks and this week the winners were Paul Read, Allan Chisholm and Peter Jones (skip) who had a 14 to nine lead after 12 ends before zooming home for a 28 to 14 win against Jeff McCusker, Peter James and Mitch Mitchell (skip).
Second place went to Warren Bender, John Voytas and John Downie (skip) who started strongly and after a fightback from Mick Cavic, Graham Cummins and Col Armstrong (skip). John's team picked up two shots on the last end to take their match 20 to 18.
Allan Chisholm showed his consistency by having the first resting toucher at 1.25, good one Chiso. Thank you to Rapley's Quality Meat, Narooma Plaza, for their continued support.
The winners on Saturday were Tiger Fryer and Darrell Goodridge (skip) who played well all afternoon as they led 12 to seven after 13 ends and kept the form going to win their game 18 to 12 against Vince Stocks and Mick Cavic (skip).
On Sunday we had 24 bowlers for four rinks of triples. Winners were decided by Highest Winning Margin and first place went to Sue Waldock, Clare Cork and Darrell Goodridge (skip) who were on fire early to lead 14 to six after 11 ends and squared the second half to take their match 19 to 13 win against Lou Moore, Julie Smith and Bruce Rapkins (skip).
Second place went to Garry South, Greg Maloney and Terry Lewis (skip) who led 11 to eight after 11 ends and just as things were getting tight they picked up three shots on the last end for a 20 to 15 win against Alison Maloney, Peter Hawker and Ken Burrows (skip).
Major Pairs
Two Major Pairs games were played over the weekend. Graham Cummins and Dennis Maggs (skip) played Peter Dillon and Greg Ryan (skip) with Peter and Greg getting away to a good start to lead nine to two after five ends and they drew away to leas 23 to 12 after 17 ends. Graham and Dennis came back strongly to trail 20 to 23 with one end to play. Peter and Greg regrouped and took the last end and the match 24 to 20.
Col Armstrong and Garry Carberry (skip) played Les Waldock and John Scott (skip) in an epic encounter. Les and John jumped out to a good lead of nine to two after seven ends but after that the scores tightened up and from end 10 on there was only a couple of shots in it, either way. Col and Garry hit the front on end 19 but on end 21 Les and John evened the score at 16 all which forced an extra end.
The drama did not end there as, with a couple of bowls to go, Les and John held shot but Garry came through with a controlled, imaginative, shot which meant that the umpire was called in to determine who had the winning shot. Col and Garry prevailed by a fraction and that gave them the match 17 to 16.
Pennant Results
Our Grade 4 Pennant Team were away to Moruya on Saturday and were defeated nine and a half points to a half, three matches to nil and 55 shots to 47. Results were - Peter Robson, John Roche, Col Armstrong and David Herman (skip) lost 18 to 20; Tony Palmer, Dennis Maggs, Greg Ryan and Garry Carberry (skip) lost 13 to 19; and Les Waldock, Kevin Callaway, Jeremy Seaton and John Scott (skip) lost 17 to 26.
Our Grade 6 team were in great form away to Tuross Head where they won 9 points to one, two matches to one and 73 shots to 53. Results were - Paul Read, Greg Riley, Graham Cummins and John McNamara (skip) won 28 to 13; Neville Butt, Allan Chisholm, Peter Dillon and Peter Jones (skip) lost 23 to 27; and Neville Cork, John Voytas, Gary Murane and John Downie (skip) won 22 to 13.
To Ponder: If two wrongs don't make a right, try three.

Club Dalmeny bowls
Monday's overcast and rain threatening windy conditions had 22 players orchestrated down to a 'T' by the first born's son Ken which had the highest winning margin back again as the game decider for the winners on 11 in the Goose and Roger C-Toe from the runners-up on 7 in T Dray-Left, Pom Kennedy and Barry Leg-Inter.
Ken scored the first resting toucher and the $275 jackpot went off too, who would believe it, but the boys in the same group including 'organiser' Ken. The only wrong bias sinner was my bearded mate Bruce and the lucky losing team on rink 11 was a sunburnt John, T Cartwright and Towelling Lewis while the raffle prizes went to Duffer Jones, Chef Keith (both twice thankfully sending it round again) for Free Kennedy.
Only 14 starters on Thursday organised by T Dray left under fine and windy conditions who had the 'points system' deciding the match winners in a 2-way countback on 191/2 points for Rabbits Ken, Cheryl Badrim and Marg Joiner from the runners-up in our organiser T and the Macedonian Illya.
No resting toucher was recorded and the $106 jackpot stayed in the bag. The wrong bias sinners included Garry L-Rentacar, Illya and Rabbits Ken while the raffle winners were some same old faces in Garry, Illya and Chef Keith.
A fine Friday evening was enjoyed by only 12 twilighters and the winners were the Goose and Jim Bow the Plumber and the sponsor's prizes went to Linda Mal and Com, Buzz Saw and Sharon Less.
Once again our No.5 pennants team went down 1/9 to Malua Bay on their home ground.
The final of the men's four's championship saw Pommie Pete, Peter Rum-back 100, Steal Hotdaughter and Sailor Brian take on John Oarley, Wayne Home-100, Par Budin and Buzz Saw who raced out of the blocks to lead 8/- after 3 ends until Brian and his crew started to put it together to be down 8/11 after 10 ends then slowly caught up to be one behind at the 15th end before having a clear run to the 23/14 final score after 20 ends for a great deserved come-back win.
Your writer was told by all including the man himself that 'The Pom' was the man of the match. Well done Brian and his crew and well played Buzz and his boys.
Croquet
Narooma Croquet
Over this past week there were only two days of Narooma Club Croquet competition completed, those of the continuingly popular golf croquet on Thursday and that of association croquet for serious players on Saturday.
Golf Croquet
Croquet matches cancelled due to light drizzly weather last Monday.
In mild autumn-like weather, 11 players of Narooma Croquet Club rolled up on Thursday morning for the program of golf croquet matches on green No 1 at Dalmeny Club. This presented a tough scheduling task for competition coordinator, Fay O'Connor, to manage all the matches required on the one available court.
Nevertheless, of the 10 scheduled matches, eight were completed when the time limit of three hours ran out. Coincidentally, Fay O'Connor herself was the player of the round when she figured in three wins from three matches. The skill shown by Fay in recent competition has placed her under the spotlight of talent scouts for the association croquet game.
Game scores in golf croquet were a little lopsided except for the close score in game four, with the highly rated doubles combination of club captain Christine Stent and veteran Pearl Hanson just holding out the pairing of club champion Janet Jones and consistently reliable Sally McGourty. Of special mention was the 'pink pig' award to Mary Ryan for scoring at hoop 6 in game 3 and the 'blue cow' award to Heather McGourty for determinedly stopping Len Favier scoring all the hoops in games 2 and 5.
Also it was a welcome return to croquet competition by Jean Phillips after a short illness. Details of all matches were as follows:-
Game 1 - Janet Jones and Pearl Hanson 7 def Sally McGourty and Christine Stent 1. Game 2 - Len Favier and Helen Stannard 7 def Louise Starkie and Heather McGourty 2. Game 3 - Fay O'Connor 7 def Jean Phillips and Mary Ryan 3. Game 4 - Christine Stent and Pearl Hanson 7 def Janet Jones and Sally McGourty 6. Game 5 - Louise Starkie and Len Favier 7 def Helen Stannard and Heather McGourty 2. Game 6 - Janet Jones and Fay O'Connor 7 def Sally McGourty and Jean Phillips 3. Game 7 - Christine Stent and Sally McGourty 7 def Pearl Hanson and Louise Starkie 1. Game 8 - Fay O'Connor and Helen Stannard 7 def Jean Phillips and Heather McGourty 2. Game 9 - Len Favier vs Janet Jones. Match abandoned. Game 10 -Pearl Hanson 3 vs Louise Starkie 3. Match unfinished. Paul Chenoveth and Cathy Sforcina each had a bye.
Association Croquet
Under overcast and muggy conditions four players from Narooma Croquet Club were greeted by a wallaby on the green verges when they assembled at Dalmeny Green No 1 last Saturday morning. The task was to tackle competition in two matches of handicap association singles croquet.
In game 1, Pearl Hanson with a handicap of 18, challenged Janet Jones with a handicap of 11. Hence Pearl was allowed seven bisques (free strokes). In game 2, Len Favier with a handicap of 20, challenged Pauline Wilcock with a handicap of 16. Hence Len was allowed 4 bisques (free strokes). Both matches were time limited to 21/2 hours.
In the event the lower handicap players won their matches, with Janet Jones scoring 22 points to 7 points by Pearl Hanson, and with Pauline Wilcock scoring 21 points to 16 by Len Favier. Highlights were that in the second match Len Favier trailed by 10 points at the half-way point, but then put together a string of accurate strokes to score successively at hoops 4, 5 and 6, but then Pauline steadied and held sway to win by five points at the end of the match.
