Narooma Chamber of Commerce president Dr Jenny Munro explained the Community Plan was the result of two workshops involving about 75 locals run by an independent facilitator.
"It was completed at the end of 2019, but with the bushfires and then COVID-19 the plan has not yet had the exposure it deserves," Dr Munro said.
She outlined several projects highlighted in the plan:
- Narooma Bypass and Bridge, noting a small committee met the previous evening to start gaining a community view to put to the NSW Government
- Creation of a world class mountain bike trail system, the nucleus of which has already been constructed
- Narooma Oyster Experience Centre in Forsters Bay area, by Narooma Rocks and Narooma Oyster Festival
- The Narooma Arts and Community Centre on School of Arts' site. Council has given Development Consent
- Indigenous Cultural Experiences
Many of these projects aim to create jobs but some at the breakfast expressed frustration at not being able to fill existing jobs. Dr Munro and Narooma High principal Fiona Jackson both expressed concern that many young people today seem not interested in working, with Ms Jackson suggesting social media was largely to blame.
The Narooma Bypass was also a hot topic during discussion.
Dr Munro said 'fixing Narooma Bar' was also listed as a major project, an issue that has been the focus of many major studies over the years but with no viable solution yet found.
Rotary president Ange Ulrichsen and Andrew Lawson are delighted with the interest being shown by local businesses in the Business Breakfasts, held on the third Thursday each month, with many also enjoying networking with other business people.
The next Business Breakfast on Thursday, June 17 will feature Zarina Fitzgerald from Apprenticeship Support Australia who will talk about the government assistance available for businesses.
