Phillips top-scored as the tourists made 180 on Friday, giving them a first-innings lead of eight, and then had Bangladesh in early trouble at 2-38 before play was called off because of bad light.
The No.7's batting was more one-day than Test as he led the charge, with nine fours and four sixes.
After all of day two and Friday's morning session were washed out, New Zealand resumed on 5-55 after blasting Bangladesh out for 172.
Offspinner Mehidy Hasan and left-arm spinner Taijul Islam claimed three wickets apiece.
Alaz Patel dismissed Mahmudul Hasan and New Zealand captain Tim Southee claimed the wicket of counterpart Najmul Hossain Shanto before bad light stopped play early.
