A COALITION Government will provide a $10,000 grant to Narooma School of Arts to assist with the cost of re-sheeting the iconic Memorial Hall that houses Narooma Cinemas, said Liberal candidate for Eden-Monaro Peter Hendy.

In announcing the grant in Narooma on Friday, Mr Hendy said the grant would be under the Coalition’s $1.4 million Community Heritage Grants program, which will be additional funding on top of existing community heritage funding.
“Narooma has a unique and fascinating history and there are many great local stories to tell,” Mr Hendy said. “By protecting and preserving this local heritage, we are ensuring that these stories are not forgotten.
“Without the tireless work of local community groups in rescuing historical artefacts and researching local history, our sense of who we are and where we’ve come from would be greatly diminished.”
The hall is part of $1.8m in community-owned assets held in trust and managed on the community’s behalf by Narooma School of Arts & Soldiers War Memorial Hall Inc.
The heritage-listed School of Arts Hall is leased to an independent operator for use as a cinema and theatre.
Narooma School of Arts president Jock Munro said re-sheeting the roof is costing over $40,000, with replacement of the roof ventilators an additional expense to what was anticipated.
“We’re paying for this work with a NSW Government grant, a donation from Quota and a loan from MACS,” he said. “This grant from a Coalition Government will assist us enormously.”
Mr Hendy said throughout Australia volunteers invest an incredible amount of time and energy in collecting and preserving our heritage.
The Coalition’s Community Heritage Grants program recognises the importance of local history and provides direct support for the work of local historical and heritage groups across Australia.
Under the program, grants of up to $10,000 will be made available to local historical or heritage groups for the conservation, development and exhibition of our local cultural heritage.
