The forum will give fishers the opportunity to hear about the current trout stocking program, management practices, and updates on research.
“This is a great opportunity for local fishing enthusiasts to learn the latest information about our popular trout fishery, which provides significant social, economic and tourism benefits to the region,” the Member for Monaro John Barilaro said.
“The forum will involve managers and scientists and from the Department of Primary Industries (DPI) who are committed to the long term success of the region’s important trout fishery.
“The issue of reduced catches of rainbow trout in Lakes Jindabyne and Eucumbene during the past two years will also be discussed at the forum.
“I understand there is still plenty of rainbow trout to be caught, according to fishers who use deeper trolling methods.
“The good news is brown trout catches have continued to remain stable in the lakes and the brown trout spawning fishery has been excellent.”
The forum will also hear from leading New Zealand scientist, Dr Michel Dedual, from the Department of Conservation in Turangi who will provide insights into the iconic Taupo trout fishery which has also experienced changes in catch rates of rainbow trout in recent times.
“I would like to encourage as many fishers as possible to attend this forum because it will also enable DPI to gain valuable feedback from the fishing public on some of the most popular trout fishing locations in NSW,” said Mr Barilaro.
“This feedback will assist DPI and the angler based Snowy Lakes Strategy Working Group who provide direct advice on the management of the fishery.”
The trout season closes on 10 June 2014. Fishers have a few weeks left to fish the Thredbo River and Eucumbene River trout spawning runs.
The forum will take place at the Cooma Ex-Services Club at 6pm on Thursday 29 May 2014.
Information on the fishing rules can be found at www.fisheries.nsw.gov.au or in the NSW Freshwater Fishing Guide which is available from DPI fisheries offices and most bait and tackle stores.
