Three Year 3 children, all from Mr Thackray’s Kingfishers class, received awards.
Stephie Ovington, Jacob Bartusch-Rice and Ruby Efraemson were invited to an awards ceremony and morning tea with the mayor Lindsay Brown in the Eurobodalla Council Chambers last Thursday.
As the ceremony coincided with Narooma Public School’s Book Week Character Parade, the girls made quite an entrance in their fancy dress outfits!
There were 255 entries for the competition this year across the five age categories and all three finalists in the 7-8 age group were from Narooma Public School.
They all received awards on the day with Ruby winning first place, Stephie runner-up and Jacob receiving the Eurobodalla Writers Encouragement Award.
“Council would like to congratulate the young authors whose stories are published in the anthology. It’s a very special publication that captures their diversity of talent and imagination and is a wonderful memento for the winners and their families,” Clr Brown said.
The competition’s judges were Helen Kay, Olgamary Savage, Councillor Danielle Brice and two Eurobodalla Writers’ Group representatives, Mavis Hayes and Louise Falcioni.
The mayor handed out the prizes in front of families, friends and teachers and council’s general manager Dr Catherine Dale and library staff.
As well as the anthology and a $50 book voucher from Moruya Books, Thomas Brown received the Syd Hayes Creative Writing Award of a Grey Banksia pen, crafted and donated by Richard Turley of Moruya.
This award was presented to Thomas by councillor Fergus Thomson, Mavis Hayes and Richard Turley in honour of local writer Syd Hayes and his contribution to creative writing.

All finalists’ stories and illustrations have been professionally bound and published and a copy of this book was presented to each child along with their award.
Copies of the book are available for sale through the Eurobodalla Shire Council.
