Eurobodalla Shire Council is reminding pet owners that the best way to keep their cats and dogs safe and on the right side of the law is to register them for life.

Before they are registered, your pet must be microchipped and council is inviting you to take them to a free microchipping day at the Moruya pound on Saturday, October 18, from 9am to 1pm.
The move is part of council’s efforts to continue to reduce the number of unidentified and unregistered pets in our community which, in turn, helps our rangers keep track of lost, straying and menacing animals.
The NSW Government’s Companion Animal database shows that just 62 per cent of microchipped dogs and 21 per cent of microchipped cats have been lifetime registered. The NSW Companion Animal Act 1998 requires all dogs and cats to be microchipped by 12 weeks of age and before they are sold or given away. They must also be lifetime registered from six months’ old and wear a collar with an identification tag.
‘Registration benefits everyone and most importantly it means we can identify your lost pet and return it to you,’ said Mayor Lindsay Brown.
‘Even though the situation has improved over the last two years and we have been able to return more animals to their owners, there is still a lot of unregistered cats and dogs in our shire.
‘We are also mindful about managing the health and safety of our community which can be affected by straying or menacing dogs.’
Council’s free microchipping offer will save you between $45 and $62 and you can pick up a registration form on the day. Lifetime registration will cost you between $20 and $188 depending on whether you are a pensioner, a breeder or if your animal is desexed.
