Social Bowls winners’ circle
ON Wednesday we had 54 bowlers including several regular visitors and some who were enjoying Narooma for the first time. It was a Maggsy Draw day with this week being largest margin. The winners were John Alford, Ken Burrows and Tony Gors (skip) who led all the way for a 27 to 11 win over Ralph Redhead, Tom Giezekamp and Owen Clark (skip). Second place went to Alan Simpson, Larry Hardingham and Jeff Iles (skip) who led 15 to 12 after 17 ends before finishing strongly for a 24 to 12 win. Michael Knight was on song early for a resting toucher at 12.58pm, well done Mike.
On Saturday there was five rinks of pairs with the winners being John Downie and Stan Bordiuk (skip) who led 17 to six after 13 ends before they ran into some stiff opposition to take the match 19 to 16 against Graham Cummins and Dennis Maggs (skip). Second place went to John Alford and Tony Fryer (skip) who had a close game against Peter Jones and Tony Palmer (skip) being 13 all after 18 ends before they kicked on to win the match 18 to 14.
There were three rinks of Joe's Special enthusiasts in action on Sunday and the straw draw winners were Merv Treasure, Leo Winter and Gerry Simmons (skip) who were down 13 to 18 after 16 ends but finished with a flourish to defeat Deidre Dick, Ken Burrows and Shirley Pilgrim (skip) 19 to 18.
Club Major Singles Championship
There was plenty of action during the week in the Club Singles Championship with all third round matches and semi-finals completed. The results were Barry Lymbery led 19 to 10 after 19 ends against John Spees with John coming back strongly only to see Barry come up with some great bowls on the last end to take the match 31 to 28. Jay Breust had a great match against John Downie with the scores being even on seven occasions with John taking the lead 20 to 19 after 23 ends. Jay finished strongly to pick up a couple of multiple ends to win the match 31 to 25. In the semi-finals Keith Pickett started off with some great bowls to lead Barry Lymbery 21 to six after 16 ends before Barry got into his rhythm to close in to a two shot margin, 22 to 24 after 26 ends. Keith then consolidated and took the next two ends and the match 31 to 22. Jay Breust also started strongly to lead 14 to four against Brad Griffiths before Brad picked up seven of the next 10 ends to take the score to 21 to 16 in Jay's favour. Jay and Brad swapped ends until Jay picked up a shot on each of the last three ends to take the match 31 to 21. This puts Jay up against Keith in, what should be a fantastic final, best of luck to both of you.
Pennant matches
There were no pennant matches last weekend and play resumes this Saturday with the No 4 team playing Tuross at Tuross and the No 6 Dalmeny/Narooma team playing the Bodalla/Tuross team at Bodalla. Best of luck to our teams, hopefully we can build on the promising results and win our matches this week.

To ponder
When I told my doctor I couldn't afford an operation, he offered to touch up my x-rays.

Club Dalmeny
Brownie, (Brian) has retired after many years reporting club results and what a great job he did, so a big thank you from all your bowling mates and I in my first weekly report have a big page to fill and only hope I can do half as well. I should be wearing my L-plates as last week’s first time organiser, Leigh Falkiner did, and I hope I, and my fellow bowlers, get as much fun out of it as he did collecting the wrong bias fines and making Marg Laker wait and then run for her resting toucher money as she claimed the prize with her first bowl. I, like Leigh, want to get the green P’s on our plate without doing 120 hours learning and years of training and all without a drink.
Fine and warm windy conditions greeted 48 players on Monday and our winners under the ‘shots up’ system were Bernie Jones, Ralph Redhead and Bob Luke with runners up Leo Winter, Ken Bennie and Hank Koster and the resting toucher going to Ace Elphick. The jackpot of $140 was not won but the lucky door prize went to Peter Hatton. Same old faces!
Leigh again was running the show again on Thursday and somehow had already progressed to his red P’s – his driving or drawing instructor must be good or he knows something about speeding within the law. But I digress, the winners under the point’s system were the Norma Hutson/Alan Brown lead combo with Alex Flack and Ron Dunk and runners up, Margaret Carpenter and Bev and Keith Bowater. The resting toucher went to Alan MacDonald well before two others in his playing group and the $180 jackpot, jackpots. As we played on both greens, those of us on the lower green pondered what was going on at the upper level when a woman’s voice was heard excitedly to say “Rick I want you to put it in here”! (Name changed somewhat to protect the guilty).
President Keith again reminded everyone of the Dalmeny Lakeview May Carnival and the Club major pairs, to get your names down early, as with all competitions, to help the organisers and please do not alter or rip off playing sheets as someone nearly missed out on a major singles game last week due to this annoying action.
The two major singles quarter finals played ended with similar scores but dissimilar beginnings and ends. Keith Bowater and Wayne Bruest were pretty even after 24 ends but Keith finished 9-2 in the last six to win 31/24. Gary Lavis seemed to have it in the bag after 26 ends but Leigh Falkiner gave him a fright coming home strongly 10-3 over the last seven ends but went down 31/25, maybe his rush to get his “reds” took something out of his late charge. Of the other two matches scheduled to be played, Marty Turner won by four foot over the cruising Norm Budin and the other match ended with a score, of marker one players nil.
Your new scribe was going to submit this report under the pseudonym of “Goose” so he could fly off into the wild blue yonder if it didn’t go down well but as president Keith has already announced who I am, it’s difficult to stay down and hidden, especially after I had plucked out one of my best quills from my bottom drawer to pen this report. So to next time, if there is one, enjoy your bowls and I’m the Goose. That’s all from me and it’s over to Twilight Ron for his report.
Twilight bowls
Only 12 players on the night and what a lovely night for bowls. Winners were the pair of Don Brown and Lee Faulkner. Runners up being Zane (grandson) and Peter (granpa) Bashford. Twilight Bowls is nearing their end with daylight saving finishing on April 5.
Narooma women’s bowls
TWENTY-five ladies enjoyed social bowls last Tuesday, a lovely warm day with a gusty breeze. Teams played pairs, triples and two games of fours. Jan Rapkins worked hard as the swinging lead in the triples game which sounded like lots of fun, then Jan, Coral Read and Jenny Coulson (skip) won second prize for the day against Jan, Heather McGourty and Clare Cork (skip). First rink prize won by Sue Bender, Mavis Hardy, Pat Wood and Barb McNamara (skip) against Gail Palmer, Carol Rogerson, Deb Cargill and Marilyn Thomson (skip). Sue Wales was the lucky winner of the weekly raffle, donated by Rapleys Midtown Meats.
Birthday wishes to Willy Blink who recently relocated to Mildura, for last Friday, February 20. Also to life member Norma Marsh, now living on the North Coast, for this coming Friday. Happy Birthday and hope you both have a great day.
Major Singles round two results. Isabel Halsey and Carol Rogerson had a great game in which Isabel led early and Carol fought back to level scores and in a hard fought finish Carol prevailed to win the last end and take the match – great bowls ladies. Lorraine Mitchell defeated Kerry Ferguson and Sue Wales had a close encounter against Gail Palmer before going on to win her match. Gail Riley played excellent bowls early then Aurelia Robinson came from behind to level the scores before Gail won the next three ends to take the match – another good game!
Two semi-finals were played on Sunday – in game one Sue Wales led early then Carol Rogerson fought hard reducing the margin to just one shot. Sue, re-gathering, won the last six ends to secure her victory and a place in the final. Game two between Gail Riley and Lorraine Mitchell was another good contest, in which scores were close early before Lorraine got away, to be pursued by Gail who played some great bowls to take the match by three shots. Congratulations to Sue and Gail who will play the final on Friday, March 6. It should be a good game so come and show your support.
Friday mixed bowls was enjoyed by a small group playing triples and pairs on a humid day with a welcome breeze. Winning the rink prize after a close game against Shirley Pilgrim and Gerry Simmons (skip) were Sue and Warren Bender (skip). Thanks to visitors Merv, Bob and Michael Kelly who joined in the triples game.

TUESDAY 17 was a great day for bowls, perfect Dalmeny weather. Winners on a count back for highest winning margin were Gail Farrell, Gabby Cheel, Lois McGregor and Lyn Dunbar, with the runners up Margaret Carpenter, Pat Cameron, Bev Bowater and Maureen McKenzie. The spider was won by Lucy Gresty, Anne Luke had her first resting toucher in many a long time. The raffles were won by Lois McGregor and Bev Bowater. There were no birthdays this week.
