While the Hunter and Central Coast were the real winners with the most travel secrets in NSW, the number one spot listed was a stay at Collette Dinnigan’s Airbnb coastal getaway at Milton, while Montague Island was listed as number 56 as “a stay on your own island”.
Australia’s best-selling travel magazine, Australian Traveller, reveals NSW is the state with the most secret-yet-amazing places Aussies are yet to discover, in a special collector’s edition of the magazine, on sale April 2.
The list was compiled by the Australian Traveller team after interviewing hundreds of well-known and well-travelled Australians. It reveals their favourite secret places, with many surprises…

NSW was the state with the most amazing places with 28 hidden gems on the list.
Places like Collette Dinnigan’s Airbnb coastal getaway at Milton and the BBC’s ‘10th most beautiful cinema in the world’ at Avoca Beach were just two of the 28 to make the list.
“It was totally unexpected for the most populated state, NSW, to dominate the list. You would be forgiven for thinking there are no more secrets,” says Australian Traveller founder Quentin Long.
“It just shows you we are forever underestimating our country and just how wonderful and lucky we are. It’s special projects like this that remind us just how many more experiences there are right on our doorstep in NSW, let alone the rest of the country, left to explore.” he says
