WAGONGA Inlet is literally alive with fish at the moment, the hardest decision for fishers has been what species to target?
Local fishers Darren “Dash” Bowater and “Hippie” Carradus had a brilliant weekend on Wagonga Inlet, on the two days they boated over 100 fish with 94 being greater than legal size, 51 on day 1 and 43 on Day 2.
Total species tally was 38 flathead, 34 tailor, 14 trevally, two bream, two flounder, two snapper, a salmon, a leatherjacket, and two undersize jewfish.
If you want to get the ‘good oil’ on these fish call into the Ocean Hut and speak to Dash.
Montague Island continues to produce some nice kingfish, with the best fish being caught in the afternoon - when the seals have lost interest and are taking their ‘siesta’ on the island.
Live bait and jigs have accounted for the best kingfish, most caught on the North End. With the water temp still around 19.5c fishing should still be quite good for a while yet.
There has been a fairly narrow band of excellent water for yellowfin tuna stretching from Wollongong to Bermagui this week, as conditions improve for offshore boats the yellowfin will be the target of choice for plenty of local and visiting boats.
If you can find a sandy spot without green toads or Chinaman’s Jackets you will be rewarded with some of the largest flathead seen for years, and you can also add in some great gummy sharks and flounder to the bag with a bit of luck.
Fishing Tip of the Week: If you are targeting Kingfish of an afternoon, the best spots for live baits are on the western side of Montague Island. Try in in front of the old jetty, and have a squid jig ready.
Fishing Joke of the Week: Diner: Waiter, waiter, what’s wrong with this fish? Waiter: Long time no sea, sir.

Late breaking fishing news!
HAPPY DAYS AT MONTAGUE! The punters aboard charter boat Playstation on Tuesday had a cracking day at the big rock, bagging out on good sized kings!
Skipper Nick Cowley said jigs were the order of the day for the Montague freight trains. Nothing but smiles and sore shoulders here, love ya work guys. Lets hope they stay on the chew for a while, it's been a very frustrating year thus far. - Dash
Nick himself reported: "Some great kingfish action at Montague this morning bagging out on kingfish, great fun on jigs as it was the choice method for them today! As a nice patch of water pushes down the coast it's getting to that time of year when hopefully we should see yellowfin tuna turn up, with the weather settling over the weekend and the Canberra yellowfin tournament in Bermi this being on hopefully some tuna will turn up!"
Was just down at the golf course this Wednesday morning and could see the "kingfish huddle" of boats just off the north side - they must be biting!
Scott Bradley down at Bermagui Bait & Tackle meanwhile on Tuesday reported:
"The size, shape and location of the eddy sitting off the Far South Coast looks the goods, while we'll be hoping to see a few Yellowfin this weekend (and beyond) it will only be a few weeks before we see a few stray bluefin pushing up the coast.
No one fished wide this week and won't until Saturday, strong westerlies have plagued the coast. This SST is an averaging model that sums up the bigger picture of temp and current. Just need it to track a little closer this season but it looks Ok and will have some fish in it soon enough."
