Council’s director of planning and sustainability Lindsay Usher said the draft study includes comprehensive information about flood prone land in the Narooma and Dalmeny area, including the commercially important Narooma Flat, and will offer certainty for developers and residents.
“The flood study covers the coastal inlets of Mummaga Lake, Kianga, The Duck Pond and Wagonga Inlet and represents progress towards replacing council’s interim coastal hazard adaptation code,” Mr Usher said.
“It applies the sea level rise projections adopted by Council last November, which are lower than the previous State policy.
“The study is good news for property owners in the study area because once adopted, it will replace the code currently in use by council and provide certainty for developers and residents.
“Residents will also no longer be required to undertake a flood study to build and we can provide residents with clearer advice and longer term certainty in respect to the flood risk for the Narooma area.”
The draft Narooma coastal inlets flood study will be on public exhibition for six weeks once endorsed by council, and Mr Usher said council welcomed feedback from property owners and the broader community.
“If the draft study is endorsed next week, council will host two community drop-in sessions as part of the exhibition, where residents can meet with the consultants and council staff to discuss the study and what it means for them,” he said.
“If people have questions, they can contact council’s coastal and flood management planner Norm Lenehan on 4474 1000.”
The draft study will be available at council’s three libraries, the administration centre in Moruya and on the council website at www.esc.nsw.gov.au
Council acknowledges the Office of Environment and Heritage Flood Management Program for its funding and technical advice towards the Narooma coastal inlets flood study.
