And then this Sunday starting at 12noon there will be a Welcome to Country ceremony with dancing.
The large display of indigenous arts and crafts is on all this month at the Plaza Gallery, between 10am and 4pm weekdays and 10am to 1pm on Saturdays, for the NAIDOC celebration of Indigenous culture.
MACS members spent the weekend re-configuring the Plaza Gallery and hanging artworks as they came in.
Member Dorothy Noble said they are expecting more works through the week, including from Natalie Bateman of Keialuna Art, and also from the Ngaardi Women's Group at Wallaga and the Wallaga Lake Study Centre.
“So far we have some unique wood-carvings, finely etched emu eggs and clicking sticks from Alan Solomon; a wide variety of handcrafted palm art by Mary and Kate Moore from Raw Kreations; some of Narooma artist Cheryl Davison's beautiful cards and prints; shell balls in glass by Alison Walker and delicately crafted shell slippers by Viv Mason,” she said.
“Bold and colourful beanies greet you at the gallery entrance, perfect to keep your head warm on these cold winter mornings!”
The Narooma Djaadjawan Dancers and Marg Hansen have returned from a triumphant journey to the Alice Springs Beanie Festival.
They won the Reconciliation Prize with their beautiful beanie made from local natural material and feathers.
The prize-winning beanie will tour Australia for nine months before returning home to Narooma.
They were the only dance group at the festival and were applauded for their performance.
They have been invited back to perform at the celebration of the 20th annual Beanie Festival in 2016.
“Great ambassadors for Narooma,” Dorothy said.
The Plaza Gallery is also showcasing the art work of the children at The Little Yuin Pre-school, Wallaga Lake with copies available of their book 'Our Little Yuin', published earlier this year
The gallery plans to display the original art works after project consultant Beth Wilson has held her workshop 'Introducing ‘Our Little Yuin’ storymaking with native animals' today Wednesday, July 8, from 11am to 12pm at Narooma Library.
The Welcome to Country NAIDOC celebration takes place upstairs in Narooma Plaza public area this Sunday, July 12 from 12noon to 4pm.
The indigenous art and craft fair takes place all afternoon with the Welcome to Country and Djaadjawan Dancers at 1pm.
